So I recently had a bit of a clean out and got rid of a load of stuff I no longer needed/wanted in exchange for a store voucher with CeX (came across these guys through Anny a while ago when I couldn't find a S1 boxset of Geass on blu-ray). Most of which were old DVDs I now have HD copies of and old console games I now have on PC.
Anyway.. since I've been looking to expand my blu-ray collection I thought I would do just that with the voucher (once I get it) and was basically looking for some movie recommendations. Just focusing on the movies you would consider to be some of the best you've ever seen. Masterpieces, films to see before you die etc.. Ive already started making a list myself based on other lists I've come across (the IMDb's Top 250 being just one of those) but It'd be nice to throw some recommendations in from you guys as well, and/or compare and prioritize getting certain titles based on those.

I won't post a full list of the movies I already own as that would be ridiculous but to name a few: The Godfather trilogy, anything and everything from Hitchcock, Schindler's List, Heat, Amelie, Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, lots from Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull etc), 12 Angry Men, Downfall, most of the movies from Christopher Nolan, the Stanley Kubrick boxset, The Usual Suspects, Apocalypse Now, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Fight Club, Alien films, Back to the Future films, Withnail & I, Scarface, Leon, American Beauty, The Wicker Man... Lots of others too ofc but some of these (like the Godfather movies and many of Hitchcock' for example) tend to pop up in other lists and are some of my personal favourites (of which I already own), so keep those in mind.

The list I started has a mix of movies I've seen but don't own yet (like Blade Runner & Shawshank), and others which I've often come across/heard about and would like to get, but haven't actually seen (like Bicycle Thieves, Double Indemnity, Casablanca etc). I'll add/compare any recommendations here to said list and then get as many of them as I can.

So guys, what would you say are some of your favourite movies of all time?. Which titles should I consider adding to my collection? :)
Old or new, black or white, world cinema. Whatever. I'll consider most stuff.

Cheers Mech. I'll have a read into those very shortly.

I haven't seen The City of Lost Children though so I'll definitely look into seeing that one. There doesn't appear to be a blu-ray release of it just yet however so I'll add it to my list for getting once there is! (I tend not to buy DVDs anymore as if there's a chance something will receive a blu-ray release I'd rather wait and get that rather than a SD copy, otherwise I'll only want to replace it when a HD release arrives which is why I got rid of some of my old DVDs heh]

Anyone else? Not looking for any particular genre btw, just titles you'd put in your all-time favourites list and ones you consider to be some of the greatest ever made. Classics, movies which deserve a place in everyones collection etc.

Seen these but don't own them (tell a lie, I used to have Meet Joe Black on VHS but I've yet to replace that). I already have Blade Runner on my list for getting, I'll stick the others on there too.

Added Chinatown. How could I forget Chinatown.

Also a few more.

Figure every time I come back to this thread I'll think of a few more.

edit: Also, a lot more.

Two comedies stand out at the moment; The original 'In-Laws' with Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, and the original 'The Producers' with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel. Both are ironic laugh out loud films.
My favorite sci-fi's? 'Buckaroo Banzai', 'Robocop', 'Blade Runner', and 'Alien'.
I have to say that, as cliche as it is, 'Casablanca' is my all time favorite film. See it if you haven't. It's pretty astounding.

Casablanca is a great movie.

It's a Wonderful Life, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo are among the many classic movies I enjoy watching.

There are far too many too list :)

Cheers for the imput, guys :thumb:

Taking into account that I already own: 12 Angry Men, A Clockwork Orange, Alien, American Beauty, Apocalypse Now, Chinatown, Full Metal Jacket, Heat, Ronin, Schindler's List, Silence of the Lambs, Taxi Driver & The Usual Suspects from the above recommendations.

These are what I'm looking at getting methinks:
  • Blade Runner
  • Buried
  • Casablanca
  • City of God
  • Contact
  • Gattaca
  • Good Will Hunting
  • In Bruges
  • Internal Affairs Trilogy
  • Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
  • Let the Right One In
  • Metropolis
  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Se7en
  • Seven Psychopaths
  • The Apartment
  • The Game
  • The Maltese Falcon
  • The Third Man
  • There Will Be Blood
  • This is Spinal Tap
  • Training Day
  • Watchmen
  • Zodiac
I've picked some out from each list along with a few others I had in mind myself. Have only seen 4 of these before so whilst I do know of some of them, I'll be seeing the majority of them for the first time. I've kept a list of all the other recommendations too so the next time I go looking for movies I'll be sure to refer back to that and/or this thread!
Munich & City of Lost Children would have been on the list in place of something else but they don't appear to be available on blu-ray yet (over here at least) so I'll keep my eye out for those two. I have Munich on my Netflix queue for the time being.

As for my own recommendations?.. a lot of my personal favs have already been listed so I won't rehash every single one of those (like the majority of the movies I list as already owning at the top of this post). I also named some others in my first post with stuff like The Godfather Part I & II (though I like 3 as well), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Goodfellas, Amelie etc too.
Alfred Hitchcock has always been a favourite of mine though (which I mentioned before) but since I didn't list any specific titles of his I'll do so now. Here are some must see movies from the master of suspense:
He has lots of other movies worth watching too but those would probably be my top picks if I had to choose. No movie list of mine would be complete without such titles as Vertigo or Rear Window and these (along with Psycho) often pop up in other "greatest movies of all time" lists. I expect most of you will have seen at least one Hitchcock movie before but be sure to check some others out if you've only ever seen a couple. Always loved his stuff :)

I'll add this one too:
IMDb Trivia wrote:When director Henri-Georges Clouzot bought the film rights to the original novel, he reportedly beat Alfred Hitchcock by only a matter of hours.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The film is based on Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac's novel "Celle qui n'était plus" (She Who Was No More). Alfred Hitchcock also attempted to buy the rights to this novel; Boileau and Narcejac subsequently wrote "D'Entre les Morts" (From Among the Dead) especially for Hitchcock, who filmed it as Vertigo (1958).

Note: If anyone else has any further recommendations, feel free to post em!. They'll miss reaching my shopping basket now but I'll stick them on the list with the others I have left over and look back at them when I come to buy some more (or watch on Netflix or whatever) :thumb:

Tardy as always I see ^_^

Movies are quite subjective, and are directly affected by the mood of the viewer,
the time period the movie was filmed in and how you remember it...

My personal list of Essentials, everyone "whom enjoys the specific genre" should see at least once (that is not already mentioned)?
Will attempt to only mention 3 per category (mainly to preserve sanity):

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Oh Yeah)
CaddyShack (Cinderella Story)
Austin Powers (Yeah Baby!)

David Lynch's Dune [With ALL Footage] FYI its slightly troublesome to obtain
Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan (Khaaaaaan!!!)
Pitch Black (Did *not* know who he was <censored>' with!)

Iron Monkey (A younger Donnie Yen kicking ass!)
IP Man (An older Donnie Yen still kicking ass!)
Blade (Catch you <censored> at a bad time?)

Nightmare On Elm's Street (the original, not the shitty remake)
Candyman (Helen, Oh Helen, Be My Victim)
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (This is my BOOM STICK!]

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (Mel Gibson pre-alcoholism)
Indiana Jones (How many heroes carry a whip?)
Die Hard (Yipee Ki Yay!)

Donnie Darko (Wait WTF Just happened?!?)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (None Shall Pass!)
Pulp Fiction (And I Will Strike Down Upon Thee With Great Vengeance And Furious Anger!)

Labyrinth (Dance Baby Dance)
Legend (Tim Curry plays a kick ass devil and yes, that really is Tom Cruise...)
LadyHawke (Horrible porno music, but walk on the left!)

Never too late for film recommendations, Pad!
Seen a few of those before (Die Hard, Donnie Darko, Monty Python and a couple others) but there's a lot I haven't. Will definitely give those a closer look, ta :)

I've actually been meaning to try some of David Lynch' other works as I've been a fan of Twin Peaks for many years now but that's about all I've seen from him (other than Fire Walk with Me ofc). I've come across Mulholland Drive & Blue Velvet a few times when looking around so I intend to get those at some point in the near future, I'll add Dune to the list.

Pulp Fiction is one I've always been aware of too and something I've intended to check out at some point, just never actually have heh. I've seen Reservoir Dogs now though (been working my way through the blu-rays) and absolutely loved that. Quite similar to The Usual Suspects (which I think I prefer, but I've been a fan of that for a long, long time to be fair) but Pulp Fiction will probably go on my next "buy" list methinks.

Pretty sure my brother owns IP Man (and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from BD's list too) now I come to think of it...

[Have just bought Rebecca, Notorious & Spellbound on blu-ray from Amazon.ca for £14.50 (postage included). Not bad at all!. The same set costs over 30 quid on Amazon UK to import lol.
The product listing says Region A but I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that it will work on B so I should be good. I have all 3 on DVD but time to upgrade at that price I think. (I already have the Masterpiece Collection, and this. Would recommend both]

Until yesterday, I had forgotten you asked for movie recommendations. Seen these (will look into the rest!) but Jacob's Ladder & 28 Days Later are the only ones I own so far :). I actually considered buying Requiem for a Dream in the last batch but decided against it in the end. It was a fantastic movie and a very powerful one at that but thinking about it, it's not one I can ever see myself wanting to revisit time and time again in my collection. I've only ever seen it the once and I think that was enough haha.
My brother is a big fan of Kim Ki-duk and has a lot of his stuff on DVD including The Isle but he has seen much more Korean cinema than I have. Personally, Park Chan-wook & Kim Jee-woon are the two directors I've seen most from.

Park Chan-wook
Oldboy
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

I've seen more from him but those are the ones I'd list first and foremost. Oldboy is the most famous and probably an obvious choice especially to newcomers (it was admittedly the first South Korean movie I saw too) but it's still a firm favourite of mine. I need to read the manga at some point, though I understand the ending for it is supposedly very different and nowhere near as good.

Kim Jee-woon
A Bittersweet Life
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Quiet Family

A Tale of Two Sisters is probably his most famous I would say (a must watch too) but A Bittersweet Life would be my personal favourite from him. Incredible movie.
Worth listing as well is Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War. One of the best war films you'll see.

I'm going to go all western, as I love the genre

Blazing Saddles - greatest comedy ever made. This movie couldn't even be made today as too many people would be offended.
The Magnificent Seven - All star cast starring Yul Brenner and a very young Charles Bronson. Western take on The 7 Samurai.
Silverado - This holds a special place in my heart as the movie that really got me into westerns. Scott Glen, Kevin Costner. Danny Glover, Kevin Kline...the list goes on and on.
High Plains Drifter - This was the first Clint Eastwood western I ever saw and it surely left an impression. Can't say enough good things about it.
Unforgiven - Last Clint Eastwood western I ever saw. Won Best Picture and is commonly listed as one of the best movies ever, period.
Dances with Wolves - A different take on westerns. Incredible score and cinematography.

You can also pick damn near any John Wayne film and do just fine. I have a hard time since my favorite movie with The Duke was The Quiet Man, which isn't a western.
