Okay everyone, we're now in a position where we are ready to begin the transition over to phpBB3 and the redesigned Main Site. This post is just to give you the frame of when it will happen, and how it will affect you - so that no-one panics if they come here when we're halfway through the process and thinks we broke the site ;)

The transition will be taking place over the course of this Saturday (24th January). As a result, access to the forums and at times the Main Site may be sporadic at best over the course of the day.

The forum will be closed early Saturday morning (expected to be between 9:00 and 9:30 GMT) and will not re-open from that point on. When conversion is completed, the phpBB3 install will be checked to ensure our posts/threads have indeed moved successfully and that no glaring problems have surfaced during the install - if these checks are satisfactorily completed the phpBB3 forum will then be opened for use at the same URL as this one is (namely http://www.shatteredstar.org/forums/ ). Should any issues arise during the install/conversion process that are not resolvable within 24 hours, this phpBB2 forum will be re-opened until we can resolve the problem and re-convert the board. Any issues with the skin will not delay opening of the board, and will be fixed on the fly as they are found.

The Main Site will only be changed once the phpBB3 conversion is complete - as the former will likely take far longer and will certainly require more testing. Therefore expect the Main Site to be functioning normally until afternoon or evening GMT, assuming things do not proceed quicker than expected with phpBB3.

I can give no hard time estimate really, as any number of things could delay the process, help it along, or simply require consideration as we go along. With luck, by early evening the whole process will be completed and you'll be able to use everything normally. But just be aware that disruption may well continue throughout the day - and if you encounter problems with either the website or the forum just try again in a few hours time. I will, as always, be around IRC all day, so if anyone wants to find out exactly where the process is up to at any point feel free to come and talk to me on there.

- Anny

Due to a critical issue that we cannot at present work around, the move to phpBB3 has been postponed for now.

We don't have a new date on it yet, but I'll update to let you all know what is happening as soon as I have a better picture myself.

Sorry for the inconvenience :(

Not willing to say at present, especially publically. Suffice to say it is a critical one though, and the board cannot be setup whilst the problem exists.

Forgive my secrecy, however the issue is such that it is something that should definately not be posted publically or made widely known until it is resolved.

Dual purposes to this post.

Firstly, some of you may have noticed that the redesign of the Main Site is now live. My original plan was to launch the redesign alongside phpBB3, but due to the extended delay on that front (more about that later) and a slight prompt from Ed I've decided to go ahead with it now rather than wait for an as yet undetermined amount of time.

The main aim of the redeisgn, aside from giving the place a spring clean and make it more friendly to those of us using higher screen resolutions, is to try and breed consistancy between the Main Site and the forums. I have long believed that the Main Site looked like a completely seperate entity to the forums previously, which I believe is a mistake and promotes a perceived separation of the two. My goal with this redesign is to resolve this issue, and make our website feel like one site rather than two again. In this same vein, I also hope that the new design will promote the website as more of a 'Community Portal' than an individual satellite of our forums, which is what I feel it had become. I believe that it now looks and feels much more like a front, an introduction to our community then it did before - and I hope others feel the same.

You'll notice a few changes aside from the style, most prominent being the addition of a Media section and the consolidation of the 'About', 'Theorem' and 'Why' pages into one entity (both suggested in the other thread regarding Main Site changes), and the alteration of the way the screenshot popups work. All in all a lot has been tweaked and, in a few cases, patched up.

You may or may not also notice that the website is now fully compatible with the XHTML Transitional standards, meaning our website both adheres to web-coding guidelines and as such will be more cross-browser compatible and will maintain it's look for a wider range of users than before - as a variety of previous validation errors ensured that exactly how the webpage displayed to different people could be unpredictable, and not as intended, due to these errors. I realise this may mean little to those of you without Web Design experience, but it is something that I feel we should always be striving for on our website in order to make ourselves as accessible as possible to visitors. For this reason our phpBB3 skin is also fully compatible with the same standards.

Hopefully everyone likes and will enjoy the new look. Thoughts and comments are, as always, welcome - and should anyone come across any bugs I may have missed please feel free to drop a reply here and I'll get on them right away.

Secondly, I want to provide you all with an update with regards to phpBB3. We are currently awaiting a Server-Side Upgrade that is required prior to our being able to setup the phpBB3 software, and are hopeful that this will be completed soon. Currently, I am afraid to say that we do not yet have enough information to firmly nail down a date that we will be attempting the upgrade again, but we hope that it will be fairly soon, possibly very soon, so that we can move forward with matters. My thanks go to Ed over this, for his efforts both arranging the necessary upgrade and continually chasing it up for us. We would be pretty stuck without him :)

I will, of course, post again to let you all know as soon as we have more solid information on this front. For now, thank you for your patience, and I apologise for the ongoing inconvenience of having this issue in limbo for as long as it has been.

By request versions of our Wallpapers at 1920x1080 have been added to the Media page. Thanks go to MS for creating the new versions, hope you all enjoy them :)

Edit: I have also resolved a caching issue with the Stylesheet that may have prevented some people seeing the Site as intended. Sorry about the inconvenience, everyone should now see things as they should be.

Ah, in-jokes.

At least he finally admitted that Firefox is superior to the garbage application that is Internet Explorer.

[17:59] SSX-Anubis: Actually FF is easier to build for if you know what you're doing
[18:00] SSX-Anubis: the problem IE has is not it's quirks, as FF has it's own too, but not allowing you to keep tabs on what is wrong
[18:01] SSX-Anubis: I code in Firefox just because of the addons. Firebug is god

What do you mean by sort out the screenshots? Is it bugging for you, or are you talking about approaching them in a different way?

I ruled out MS' Javascript approach, due to the fact that the required Javascript files to run that system amounted to near 200k alone - which is far too much for the homepage. I am open to suggestions however, as whilst I have tried to improve the way the Screenshot system works a bit I do accept it is still far from perfect :)

I'm assuming Plov means sorting as in categorizing them, like they used to be a long time ago. We used to have text links at the top that said eg. "NC|Freespace|WoW|All" and clicking those would show the screenshots for just that game or screenshots for every game (like it is now) if you clicked "All". Not sure when or where that feature went but atm and for a while you can only view them all and if you're just looking for screenshots of a specific game you have to trapes through all the others too. - If that's what you mean Plov i'd agree too, the tabs would be useful to have again :)

(Got those 1600x1200 wallpapers for you to add to the new media page as well Anny, will link you to them tonight mate ;))

Tabs I can re-add - I took them out as on the Main Site they never actually worked at all, but I will dedicate some time to trying to fix them back up once phpBB3 is all sorted :)

And thanks MS, your work on the images is continually appreciated :thumb:

For convenience until the tabs are in:

Anarchy Online
Dark Horizons: Lore
Final Fantasy XI
Freespace
Guild Wars
Neocron
World of Warcraft

Think that's all of them. :thumb:

To let everyone know, you may have issues with either the Main Site or the Forums over the next 24 hours whilst the DNS propogates to handle our various updates that have gone live today. So don't be surprised if you encounter a white screen somewhere, it's known about.

Assuming all goes well over the next 24 hours, we'll be updating to phpBB3 on Saturday (21st February), and as such disruption to the forums should be expected over the course of that day. However this is not quite yet set in stone, and all being well I will post in this thread again tomorrow to clarify the situation.

Sorry for the ongoing inconvenience over the course of the next 24 hours - we're almost there now :)
