This game had so much potential, but they ruined it with a single camera angle. In "unassisted mode" you're stuck in an external view with the camera pointing towards your target and not your direction of flight.

It makes it very hard to line up shots, to know where you're going or even what direction you're travelling when you do the "hard turns" with the airbrake-and-drift.

It really is a shame, but it's such a fundemental problem that I cannot forgive it... which is why the demo's been deleted from my HDD.

So what you're saying is, you liked it more when it was called Ace Combat?

Don't think I've played a game called "Ace Combat" since 1985... actually, that was "Air Combat Emulator - A.C.E".

Still, being unable to go to an aircraft-relatively-orientated view when using the craft to it's limits for me makes the game unplayable. It really is a horrible, horrible, view - and you're stuck in it if you want to be able fight effectively.

As I am not a game critic I will just give my opinion. I am really enjoying the game. It would be nice to move the camera angle I agree. The controls say you can but I have yet to make it work in that area. Over all this is a fun game and I am going to practice a bit more before getting shot out the the sky in vs mode.

Well I fianlly got to a point where I fly unassisted. I can see what you are saying about the camera angle. Ileave a bit to be desired. Though I belive I can play through it without much trouble. Basically I will get used to it and be fine. I am still enjoying the game.

Seems from the second level of the demo, the "unassisted" angle is optional.

Enjoyed the demo, will at least rent it, possibly buy it. I think I prefer a Clancy story to the Ace Combat story :)

It didn't seem to be on the XBox... what control were ya using to change into cockpit mode with assist off?

Second mission (the demo I played had 2 missions), you could not turn off that mode in the first training mission. Double tapping either trigger toggles the mode.

-edit-
never mind, just read what you meant, assist off with cockpit camera. I see, you are probably right.

I am not fond of assistance off mode. I generally play in multiplayer games where its turned off, but i can't always get that option. I rarely use it myself. And when I do use it, its only to dodge missiles. And yeah it's very clear that they borrowed heavily from the Ace Combat series, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I am liking this game far more than Ace 6 to be honest.

Love this game :D

I have the PC version and assistance mode is definitely optional (with the exception of one training mission). Apparently it improves your turning and dodging but frankly it's such a minor improvement it's just not worth the effort of pressing the switch camera key, and anyway I'm still kicking some serious behind when I get online (which is very flakey at the moment) and have never used it.

Only other criticism I have is how short the campaign is. Add that to the multiplayer issues and you have a very brief game. Would be great to drop into a versus game or co-op campaign without fear of it crashing to desktop! Come on Ubisoft/Steam give me the patch!

I agree about the Vs and multi modes. I have yet to play it do to it not working well at all. I hope they fix it soon as this would be a rockin game to play online with.

I'm on board as of this week. Gamestop is having a promotional sale this week so I picked it up. I'm really enjoying it. Tending to stick with the hud view at the moment and more than happy.
