That would mean that even people with a sig like Ed's would be removed.Welcome to SSX!![]()

I agree that we should have more of a guideline rather than a rule. Like what Blueflames said, if the rule turns out to be three or four, BD couldn't have the sig he has now. BD's sig isn't really getting in the way of what he writes, so there's no reason for him to have to put slashes into his lyrics. Also, a code that removes sigs if they are longer than the post may not be a good idea because, say someone joins SSX and the thread is full of stuff like:
"We are the facilitators of our own creative evolution."

something else to think about....
suppose we require that the sig be no longer than say 6 lines. what if someone has a sig that is 9 lines long, but a small size font? it wouldn't appear ridiculously long, but it would still be over the limit. so are they within their limits or simply finding away to get around the rules?
ok here are my 2 cents. i'm a member of a board (http://www.nissanminis.com) that allows pictures and text in signatures. though the size of the sigs is regulated, some of it still seems a bit over the top. i think that since we don't allow pictures in our sigs, the length of text really isn't that much of an issue. now, granted if someone comes in with 25 lines of text, that's ridiculous.
now, keep in mind what i am proposing is recommendations not strict rules. i think 6 or 7 lines would be a good recommendation for max length at a normal size font. for smaller size fonts, 10 lines would be a good recommendation. thus it would look like this:
normal size font:
this is
what the
sig would
look like
at max
size of
seven lines.
small size font:
here
is an
example
of what
the sig
would
look like
at max
size of
ten lines.
i figured this would appease those who want regulation, but at the same time not be quite so strict and regulating as "rules" for those opposed to that idea. would this be reasonable?

And why should a three-line or (more often) longer signature be appended to a three-word post? Quite frankly, that's ridiculous.Kahn wrote:Also, a code that removes sigs if they are longer than the post may not be a good idea because, say someone joins SSX and the thread is full of stuff like:

Likewise, there's absolutely no problem with BD putting slashes into his signature instead of line breaks. It's more vertically compact, and proper punctuation for quoting from poetry or songs, when line breaks would be inappropriate. Why use five lines, when one is just as fitting?

I don't really care what the length is (even though I prefer it to be 6 myself), but moreover I want to set a line which we can use as a guide as to why we would justify something to be overboard or okay.
Tastes differ. Better to get somewhat of a unanimous verdict so we don't seem like individual fascists.

okay, so we wait until the issue actually arises. as the first step, we ask the owner of the offending signature to shrink the size of the text. if it still seems overly large and distracting, request that they shorten or remove the signature. if it remains a problem, we fix it for them. simple as that.BlackDove wrote:I don't really care what the length is (even though I prefer it to be 6 myself), but moreover I want to set a line which we can use as a guide as to why we would justify something to be overboard or okay.

my question is...why has this come up as an issue? as far as i've seen, no one here has an ungodly long or distracting signature?

This came up as an issue now simply because I thought we've done it already. Anubis pointed me to the fact we haven't, so I made the poll.
Every living forum out there (that's not gutter-ridden) has signature restrictions of one way or the other. We don't. So far up until now, we've gone to each and every member who had an annoying one and either removed it or told him to fix it.
We'll encounter these things in the future as well. Better to have a reference to collective opinion on this so a moderator or an administrator knows what other tastes are like, and act accordingly.
