Back in my day, we called it Japanimation, and the Robotech series sucked me in.
Anyone besides Sha'eil seen it?

Oddly enough, I've only ever seen maybe one or two episodes. I say oddly enough because I read the book series based on it, and absolutely loved it. I've considered getting the anime from time to time (lol, yeah. I remember it being called japanimation), but I'm put off a bit by the older graphics and animation style. This was released late 70's or early 80's, if I recall correctly.
I'm afraid my eyes will bleed if I try to watch it, and ruin the nice wonderful glow I developed in my youth about Robotech

Harsh, Inq.
You know, Sesame Street didn't stand the test of time for me, but it still has lots of fond memories.
Robotech was my gateway Japanimation. You always have a soft spot for your first.

Oh, indeed, very soft, but it's kinda cheesy when you look at it now.
I think, they did alot of dumbing down of the dialogue, the voice acting is horrible, and if memory serves, the Robotech series is actually some wierd splicing of Macross and somethign else, so there's not alot of continuity across the series.

Ahh, google, how I love thee:

Seems to be spliced from THREE different series.

Yeah, originally based on Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. Robotech was the American version of the different Macross series. I've not watched any of them either, mainly for the same reason. I did watch Macross Zero, however. No prob with the graphics there, as it was released about '03-'04. Liked it so much I bought it on DVD.
I wouldn't be surprised if it were actually dumbed down as you say. It was a conversion for American audiences after all
. I guess the people in charge of it didn't think we could handle eastern culture in our cartoons, heh. Thank god they don't do that anymore. Now they just spoil them with shoddy english dubs

Aww, all the harsh words for Robotech.
I remember seeing the first episode back when "Turtles Video Rentals" was still around. Then ten years went by and I eventually acquired the rest of the series (American one). I enjoyed it, but I suppose having only a limited perspective on anime at the time helped... Not much to compare it with back then.
