What was your first?

Post by Stracius »

Anime :p duh.

I'm curious about other people's first experience with anime. What was the first one you ever watched? And what was the first anime that hooked you into the world of anime (if the answer isn't the same as from the first question)?

For me I believe the first I ever saw was "My Neighbor Totoro", a Miyazaki film. I thought it an odd movie, and very different from any I had ever seen before. Of course, I was too young to realize what it was (about ten or 12 I think), and didn't for many years to come. However, I did really like it.

The first one that actually hooked me (that I recognized as being anime) was actually a mix of two. "Trigun" and "Cowboy Bebop". Both were being played on an american cable channel named Cartoon Network (which I'm sure many will recognize) as part of some new programming they were experimenting with. To this day those are the only two anime that I can tolerate the english dubbing on :p . I continue to keep my eye on C.N. in case they show any new anime that I've missed, but otherwise don't watch any anime on it anymore. I've since found better sources ;) as well as DVDs.

I realize this doesn't date back as far as some people, say Messiah, but his mention in another thread got me thinking. Specifically about your introductory anime being one that you have a soft spot for to paraphrase. I have to agree, these three japanimations ( ) definitely hold a special place in my heart. What about you?

When I was like five, since we got Rai Due where I lived, I got some ugly anime and thought that anime is trash alltogether as a genre.

Then I saw NGE.

Rai Due? An Italian broadcast channel played anime :weird: ? Guess I shouldn't be surprised at the result.

Ahh, yes. Evangelion. Was among the first few anime I checked out, and actually bought the DVDs for as well. So rare for me to do that compared to how much I actually watch

"Starblazers" "G-Force" and "Robotech"

Does "Speed Racer" count?

Then Akira in University. We used to watch Heavy Metal after a night out, and sometimes we'd have anime.

Back in the Philippines we had lots of anime being shown, but I was not aware of the different style - American and Japanese. It was just considered Cartoons.

But as I got older, I started to learn how to distinguish the 2.

My first anime I believe was AstroBoy, a show which I belive is called "Voltes 5" and the original Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

I'm not sure if they're all anime, but AstroBoy was anime right?
I always believed that the core of what made SSC great in the past, is here in the present and future of the SSX.

Voltron was an anime? Might explain a few things... Guess Totoro wasn't my first after all

But damn, AstroBoy. That brings back memories. I only remember him from comic books though (I'm guessing adapted from manga). Didn't know that there was (yes, there was) an animated version too.

And yeah, both are considered anime. Learn somethin' new every day.

Back before I moved outta China when I was 5... It'd have to be Transformers (in Chinese dub, whee!).

Shortly after that, it was Voltron -> Samurai Warriors (I recently saw it again... and WOW DOES IT LOOK LIKE CRAP) -> Sailor Moon ( ) -> DBZ

What really got me into anime would have to be Rurouni Kenshin though. I saw it in all its 30MB .rm blurry and fuzzy glory. :thumb:

Transformers, Sailer Moon, DBZ and some old show I cant remember the name of :p
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

Love Hina and Trigun, got in touch with some anime fans at my guild on Ragnarok Online.

Back then i was totally amazed by it, it was just something i had never seen before. Unlike the cartoons broadcasted in the Netherlands, these series actually had a story line and a plot, and in the case of Love Hina lots of good fun.

Couldnt stop watching ever since. :)

My first would be Voltron when I was little and I LOVED it! But not having cable TV until college... I didn't get to see very much.

About 2 years ago I got back into anime with Escaflowne and hooked my husband as well. :thumb: Now we feed our addiction with netflix to preview before we buy, and I received a happy subscription to NewType USA for Christmas this past year (free bonus gear in EVERY issue!... okies, lame joke for those who may see all the ADV ads.. yea, I'm a geek.)

Does our childhood Transformers and Voltron count?
I still have a toy collection of both locked away in a addic somewhere

Movie wise I would say Akira was my first, it was often played @ an industrial music club back in the day as a backdrop to da beats

Erm... Wasn't Transformers created by the Japs? So doesn't that make it anime? :weird:
