It's a decent Ragnaros guide, but it's designed for Ragnaros 2.0, 3.0 these days is a tiny bit easier.

ranged DPS completely incapable of pulling agro (They should be going all out all the time, their only downtime is for mana and survivability, Paladins, this is why JoW is important, very important!).

Ontop of that it's an assumed fact that if all of the sons are CCed Rag spawns.

This Sons tactic is closer to your most recent attempt, but basically uses the Outland style tactic of assist-training them to death.

The difference with the outland and this tactic is obviously only the positioning, which is arguably immaterial if people do their jobs.

Side note to the Rag OTs, due to the dynamics of taunt it doesn't actually matter what your agro level is before the MT gets knocked back, as long as you are fast in there, and the melee have done their job (Got out), and you hit taunt, no one will die, and you will have the full agro of MT1.

If you're on the ball you don't need to melee the entire fight (unless you want to add dps ;)) unless the MT gets knocked back.

This guide is quite heavy on healing where as the outland raids are always weak on healing, our DPS is significantly higher to make up for this (even our early attempts showed higher DPS than your guys but we had less survivability) that said, having done Rag as a mage, a hunter, a paladin, a dps warrior and a rogue - I can quite happily say you can keep yourself alive the entire time if you're willing to spend a few gold per attempt.

Your survival plan should look like this:
100-150 FR + Best DPS gear you can find, don't gimp yourself for your FR you still want to be doing significant amounts of damage.
Bring 3-4 Fire Prot Pots _per attempt_ - Take one well before you start the engagement as a group.
Watch your buff slots, realise when the pot expires, and chug another.
If you took damage, bandage immediately after the next Lava Burst.

Chug one pot just before sons (30 seconds before infact, if you can).

Atop that, you should be looking to things like the Blasted Lands buffs.
This guy is the first guy you really need to go 'all out on'. - You want to bring the special buffs, you want to bring the arcane elixirs, you want to bring the flasks (if you wanna be spicy anyway@flasks).

He's worth it, a few times through the instance and once you have the encounter down and your confidence levels up you wont need them anymore - that also comes with gear.
For now though I would be encouraging the hunters and rogues to be getting the +50 AGI buff from BL.
The Priests to be getting the +50 SPI or INT buff from BL.
The Pallys/Druids/Mages/Locks to be getting the+50 INT buff from BL.
The Warriors to be getting the +50 STR or AGI or STA (depending on what you need to work most effectively) buffs from BL.

It _really_ helps.
It may not seem like a lot just sticking 50 extra x stat on yourself, but if the entire raid does it it's a gain of 2000 stats.
That's just the blasted lands buffs.

Basically somewhere around the 25% crit mark, str/ap becomes more valuable then agi, but up 'til that point a decent ish balance is best..

Just a couple things to add... those at range with 200+ FR are reporting not getting knocked back at all... taking a small amount of damage but much less significant than others with low FR. Can not stress enough how much this helps.

Another thing to report is Ragnoros and the second boss in AQ20 have been reported as highly bugged after the latest patch. So far I don't think we've seen any of the Rag bugs, but something to watch out for just in case so they don't catch us off guard:

Ragnoros Buggs:
Comes back up immediately after sons spawned, with and without banishing any sons. Fireballs clumped up raid and everybody's dead.

Prepwork: Get your fire res gear... keep farming for the blues as much as you can. Farm for the buffs QD listed above... Lung Juice cocktails melee... with the gear most have, this will increase your survivability the most. Also, since we've gone through the fight a couple of times... might want to try getting the UBRS buff before the first fight this time. We've only been getting a couple of attempts in per time anyway, and the more special bonuses we can get, the more likely we will down him this weekend.
Elemental Earth and Fire - needed for fire resistance buffs and Elemental Sharpening stones. We have people that can make both... get the rest of the mats list from them.
High dps and surviving through and killing the sons is the biggest key to winning this battle as far as I've seen... he should be a lot lower before the sons come out (aim is 30% I think), and waste him dead before the second wave. (Its not likely to win if he's not dead before second wave... possible to some maybe, but highly unlikely) Warlocks, Mages, and Hunters... this is one of the very few fights you'll be told to forget about aggro control... enjoy it and knock the crud outta him. Unfortunately Melee still has to be careful, but you still want to beat him up as much as you can without pulling aggro. Here's my challenge especially to warlocks because I understand mages and hunters need some mana for sons if they come out... locks, can you do enough dps to kill him before sons?

Warriors: bring some rage pots... don't use unless he gets to 20%, then use and execute like there's no tomorrow... if you're not MT or OT, use 2 1h weps or a 2h wep... you're going for max dps... you can switch to a shield at the sons for some added protection and then switch back...

AQ20 Rajanaxx or whatever that guys name is:

We've seen most of these already, so we know they're there... most are reporting having to completely rework this fight to accomodate the bugs...

1) 3rd or 4th wave do not come as they should, end up sometimes getting 2 waves at once regardless of what you do, other times you are able to skip the 4th wave entirely.

Workaround: Plan for the worst of the bugs (goes back and forth between the 2) - have a plan for what to do with 2 waves at the same time, have the people needed for it stay close to the front. If for some reason the 4th wave does not come on its own, do not pull it, instead pull the 5th wave, in most cases this allows you to avoid the bug of getting 2 waves at once.

Rajaxx, and yea I considered pulling wave #5 when it did that to us, I just really really really didn't wanna risk pulling wave #5 and getting wave #4 add on as a bug/exploit fixing script. :\r

Back to Rag: I dug up an old post!
This is the kinda thing people on outland were considering for ragnaros...

Most of MC, for the warlocks, is heavy usage of shadowbolts. With almost every warlock using a debuff curse (i.e. Curse of Elements, Curse of Shadow, etc.) there is no use for the Curse of Agony DoT, and most of the mobs being resistant to fire (Immolate), the only DoT warlocks can use is Corruption. For most of the fights the warlock puts up their assigned curse and casts nothing but shadowbolts back to back, occassionally using the Corruption DoT for additional DPS if necessary.

This is why I respec'd my talent tree, for MC. Because of the heavy usage of destruction and affliction spells, I switched to more of a SM/Ruin spec to get the maximum effect of shadowbolt and other spells. My previous demonolgy/affliction build was great for PVP and will also be good for BWL, but wasn't helping for MC. So far, even before I got my "Grimoire of Shadow Bolt Rank X," I have been able to keep pace with and even out-DPS the mages. This was from looking at Steve's damage meters. He might have something to say on that matter, but that is what I had been noticing. (for the last time no, i wasn't stacking the damage meter on the dog packs.)

For the Rag fight, it's a good idea to have a Major Health and Major Mana Potion, a Health Stone, and of coure lots of Bandages. When I get low on mana I just pop the mana potion, then cycle between convert--> use healthstone, convert-->use health potion, convert-->bandage up, etc. With some nice FR gear a lock should be able to pump out quite a bit of DPS before they die.

Personally I am a cheap SOB, but I always carry at least 3 health pots and 3 mana pots. Hunters may want to invest in Agility potions and since Rag can be a long fight any X mana per X seconds gear is handy to have too, Like mana oil for caster weapons. Also druids don't HAVE to innervate priests only. :D

Consumables are a key ingredient whenever you are trying for a first time Rag kill.
